Week of October 31

The +10 Mindset
The 2nd quarter of the school year has begun, and teachers have been focusing on how they will increase the rigor or complexity in their instruction and assessments.  If we want our students to be successful academically and prepared for college and career, increasing the rigor of instruction is critically important.  If your student experiences difficulty with learning, please visit with your child's teacher or encourage your child to initiate that conversation.  Experiencing difficulty in learning is normal, but overcoming that difficulty is what leads to students to discover their excellence.

BRISD Teachers are Learning through Twitter.
Did you know that our teachers are learning at all hours? One way that our teachers are learning is through Twitter, and some of our teachers participated in last Tuesday's #BRISDLearns chat led by Kindergarten teacher, Melissa Stiney, over the topic of technology integration. Great ideas were shared by Danny Henderson, Kimberly Fritchman, Lisa Reeves, Jennifer Stroup, Stacey Raymer, Stephanie McPherson, Amy Hopkins, and Danny Henderson

Week of October 24

The +10 Mindset
The first 9 week is coming to an end, and the 1st quarter of school is over. Report cards will be coming out next week.  As you reflect with your child on his first 9 weeks, here are a few questions to ask.
  1. Which class do you feel is your best class?
  2. Which class is one that you are struggling with and would like to improve in?
  3. What can we do together to help you get better in your schoolwork and learning?
  4. Let's make a study plan to help you reach your goal (+10 goal).
Conversations with your child about his/her work will go a long way in helping him/her make significant growth in learning.

Congratulations to our newest BRMS Beta Club Inductees.

Week of October 17

The +10 Mindset

+10 Goal-Setting

Example of student +10 Goal Sheet completed by students
This week our students completed their first 6 weeks assessments.  As part of the assessment process, students were lead by teachers and principals in analyzing their scores to determine which skills need additional time and support and how students are doing at reaching their +10 Goal (increasing their performance by 10 points.  This week, take a moment to ask your student what his/her +10 goal is their core areas.  Our goal is to ensure that all students measure their learning by focusing on their own unique growth.

6 Words

BRHS student, Dawson Wright, created a phenomenal video called 6 Words.  The video describes what our very own Blue Ridge teachers believe their legacy is at BRISD.  I hope you will take a moment to watch this powerful video by a great student.

Week of October 10

The +10 Mindset
Chromebooks and homework are going
well at BRHS.
The greatest examples of excellence are not found in accomplishments or even accolades. They are revealed in silent and unnoticed events when we demolish barriers and overcome obstacles. With our students we must teach them that they are not defined by their results. They are actually refined by the process that gives them the results. A student must learn in an environment where he knows that his worth is never based on a numerical or letter grade. It is however derived from the effort and sweat they expend to achieve the result.  Excellence is not a result.  It is mindset.

This week encourage your children to define their value through their character, perseverance, hard work and sheer determination, for these are the skills hat will take them furthest in life.
